Getting Ready for a Magical Party

My oldest son just turned 9.  He is totally into Harry Potter and reads the books constantly, over and over again; so when I asked him what kind of party he wanted.... no surprise.  "Harry Potter, Mom!"

I've seen bits and pieces of the movies.  Never been able to catch one all the way through, but I think I have the general gist of it.  Plus, with a H.P. obsessed kid, it's not hard to pick up extra tidbits here and there.

My first venture into this magical party prep had to start at the beginning... with invitations.

Finished these today using the Silhouette's "Print and Cut" feature.  The Harry Potter font for the invites was found here at DaFont.com.  It was free to download and worked perfectly.  All of the clipart was purchased from the Silhouette Online Store.

The ticket at the bottom of the invitation is cut with a perforated cut to make for easy removal from the invite.  The registration marks that were on the page were cut off by making a large rectangle cut around the entire page, just inside the marks.  That way, they show up to align the image (for perforation around the ticket), but aren't in the completed project.

Roll up, tape closed with clear tape, and finish with a bright red ribbon.

Now to make the "magical prize", potion drinks, and other random magical goodies.  Will keep you all posted.

  1. That is the cutest idea!! I am a huge Harry Potter fan. I was a nanny when they first came out and the children I had loved them. I still have all the books and movies. If you have any Potter questions feel free to shot me an email. Can't wait to see it all finished! ;)

  2. Thanks, Ashley! Cameron is obsessed with Harry Potter. He read the books so many times that they literally fell apart. I ended up buying the movies (and Cam has seen them numerous times... lol!), it's just that I somehow always get pulled away and end up missing half of a movie here or there, so I'm left in the dark! If you know anything about Quidditch, though... I'm all ears. I know that the Seeker has to find the snitch and something (a football?) goes through a giant hula hoop or something. As I said, I'm horrible on the details!

  3. You are in luck! I do know a little bit about it. There are 3 balls in quidditch.I will tell you what I know.

    1) Snitch- Golden small ball with wings. Caught by the seeker and when it is caught the game ends.

    2) The Quaffle- Large, tan, soccer looking ball. This is what other players can throw through 3 hoops atop of poles on each end of the field to score points.

3)The Bludger- This a ball is about the size of an oversized grapefruit and is black. This ball is hit by beaters with little bats. They hit the ball toward other players to try to keep them from scoring or catching the snitch.

    The Players are:

The Seeker- the person in charge of catching the snitch.
The Keepers- Players who keep the balls from going in the hoops.
The beaters- The players armed with bats to use to direct the bludgers.
The Chasers- These are players that use the quaffle in a football manner trying to score them through the hoops.

There are 7 players on a team. 3 chasers, 2 beaters, 1 keeper, and 1 seeker.
The game ends when the seeker catches the snitch...meaning the game can last for days. As for the points. I think the tallest hoop is 10 points and the shorter two are 5 points. Catching the snitch is 150 points and the end of the game.

It is pretty sad that I know all of that. LOL Anywho that is all I could think of for now. If you need help at all let me know. I would be happy to help in any way. My email is on my about page. ;)

    1. Hey Ashley, Would you mind if I copied your Quidditch post and put it into the "Harry Potter" booklet I'm making for the guests to take home? It breaks the game down really nicely. :)

  4. Ashley- you are awesome. Plain and simple. :-D Thank you sooo much! From the look of it, I don't think it would be hard at all to set up a game in the backyard (being in the South, we rarely have super-cold weather). I can maybe grab some large dowels that the kids have to "ride", set up hoops on both sides of the yard, and maybe hide a homemade snitch! The grownups can be the beaters (to ensure no one gets pegged too hard). Sounds like I might be able to wear them out in no time! *laughs*

    Thanks again!!!! :)
